Texas can claim many great blues artists and Janis Joplin is one of them. B.B.King said that she sang the blues "as hard as any black person". I felt this pose embodied the title, which of course is also the title of one of her greatest songs, perfectly. She gave of herself on stage without holding anything back. I chose to portray her in the same format as my painting of Bessie Smith because both lived on the edge, going against the grain. The narrow size of the paintings feels like the societal constraints they fought against. |
